Learn what to expect with surgery from your periodontist in Savannah. If you are considering dental implants to treat your tooth loss, you are making a wise investment in your smile and oral health. Dental implants offer a long-term solution to replace your missing teeth with an option that closely mimics your natural teeth. While there are many exceptional benefits of dental implants, the process to receiving them is far different than that of other forms of tooth replacement. You will require a multi-phased treatment process, which will include surgery with a periodontist in Savannah. We understand you will have some questions about the process. We are here to put your worries at ease with what you can expect with dental implant surgery.

You May Require Additional Procedures

In order to benefit from dental implants, you may be required to undergo certain procedures prior to undergoing dental implant surgery. For example, you may need to have teeth extracted to allow for the damaged teeth to be replaced. For those who do not have adequate bone density to support the dental implants, bone grafting may be required. Depending on your exact needs, there are a few different procedures that may be required.

The Treatment Will Take Several Months

Due to advertisements that claim you can get dental implants in one day, many believe they can undergo the entire treatment all in one day. But, this is not true. The process to receive dental implants will take several phases over the course of a few months. During the first phase of treatment, implant posts are surgically inserted into the jawbone. Then, you will have to wait for your jawbone to fuse to the implant post, which can take several months. After the jawbone has healed, you will undergo the second phase of treatment, which involves another surgical process to place an abutment. An abutment is needed to allow the gum to heal correctly while also anchoring the prosthetic tooth in place. A couple of weeks after the abutment has been placed, the final phase of treatment occurs to place the custom-made crown.

There are Multiple Implant Types

There are multiple forms of dental implants that can be used to treat all degrees of tooth loss. In addition to single-tooth replacements, there are also all-on-four dental implants. All-on-four implants allow us to replace a full arch of teeth using only 4 implant posts instead of having to replace each tooth individually. In addition, for those who are missing multiple teeth, you can benefit from an implant that replaces two to three teeth using one or two implant posts.
